Miss Roanoke Valley's

Outstanding Teen

Miss America’s sister-program, the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Organization, encourages scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living, and community service in the nation’s youth. Through the power of the crown, Miss Roanoke Valley's Outstanding Teen gains a network of support and resources to promote her personal community service platform during her year of service. Miss Roanoke Valley's Outstanding Teen competes in the Miss Virginia's Outstanding Teen competition in June. 

Candidate Requirements
  • Be between the ages of 13 and 17.

  • Be a United States citizen.

  • Meet residency requirements; live or attend school in the state of Virginia. You do not need to be from Roanoke to apply.

  • Meet character criteria as set forth by the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Organization.

  • Be in reasonably good health to meet the job requirements.

  • Be able to meet the time commitment and responsibilities as set forth by the local program in which you compete.

  • Must not be eligible to compete in the Miss America Competition.

Competition Categories
  • Personal Interview with Judges (25%) - The private interview is 6-minutes long at the local competition and 8-minutes long at the state competition. Candidates submit a fact sheet about themselves. Questions are asked about educational and career goals; opinions on current events, social issues and pop culture; and interests, hobbies, and extracurricular activities. Candidates are judged on communication skills, the ability to convey her opinion, personality and confidence.
     

  • Talent (35%) - Candidates will have 90-seconds to showcase their unique talents on the stage. Candidates are judged on entertainment value as well as technical skill. The talent competition allows judges to evaluate a potential titleholder's creativity, confidence, dedication, and spark. 

  • Lifestyle & Fitness in Active Wear (15%) - Candidates perform a short individual routine to showcase her level of fitness. Judges will evaluate the candidates' confidence and composure.
     

  • Evening Wear and Onstage Question (25%) - Candidates model their evening wear of choice to display their poise, grace, and self-expression. The onstage question will be related to the candidate's community service platform.
